Finding A Good Subject. . .
Many of you have e-mailed me to know "How do I find a good subject for my still life?" Great question! First thing to do is find an interest of your liking (i.e. coffee art-my favorite--antique objects, things laying around the house that have one solitary purpose). After you find things of interest (3-4 is s good average), place them in about 20-30 various settings to see how they look. Compile a theme that these articles would convey and then have someone view it to see what they think about it. If it stirs wonder or dialogue, it will probably hold interest in others as well. Remember from your text, art is not only about what you like or dislike, but how others perceive your interpretation of what you like or dislike.
Notice how this student is concentrating on how positioning is vital to the impression he is wanting to portray. He has probably knocked these articles over 40 times or more just to see what inspires him.
