1947 Camp Hastings. Lake Villa, IL Do you want me to tell you about when I was camp director for a day? Sure. What camp was it? Camp Hasting's, Lake Villa, Illinois and the biggest city around was Antarctica. What? Wait that can't be right. Then tell me about it. I was eight years old the first year I was there. We shot bows and arrows, we went swimming, horseback riding, up the hill to the big building where we did handicrafts. Did you like it? I liked it very much.
We used to sneak around behind the cabin and watch the girls go swimming. They went swimming in the nude. Did you ever get caught? No thank God! One day when we were horseback riding I was the smallest boy and they gave me the biggest horse to ride. Was that a big deal? Yes! His name was Brown Derby. When he put down his head I had to struggle to lift his head up because his head was so heavy? I had to use all my might. Are you trying to make this sound a little more exciting than it really was? You sound like a superhero. Yes. Is there any point to this story? Should there be, it's just a story, is there any point to any story on television? No. I like stories with a point. Was there a point to Jack and the beanstalk, no. Jack went up the beanstalk talked to some super chicken and went right down the beanstalk with the giant coming right behind him. Max Baer was the giant, Jethro from The Beverly Hillbillies. Do you know The Beverly Hillbillies. Yes. Bud Abbot and Lou Costello chopped down the beanstalk. Oh! I missed the best part, the mother sent Jack to sell the cow at the store and he got a handful of beans. “You stupid jerk, you got a handful of beans for a cow!” and she threw the beans and it (the beanstalk) grew up huge! Jack started climbing up the beanstalk. “Be careful Jack!, `Oi Vay!” Oi Vay? He was a Jewish Jack. Bud Abbot wasn't Jewish, I make him Jewish. Maybe he was Korean or Gentile, I don't know. I doubt he was Korean. Weren't we talking about stories with a point? It does have a point, they kill the giant at the end so he wouldn't hurt anybody, I don't know what they did about the giant's wife. Kenneth Hirsch: “Be happy all your life and have love in your heart for everybody, and always tell good stories” Stories with a point? Yeah. If you want to. |
