Ken and his portrait of Donna.

1950                                                            Me and Donna

Donna was a nice girl, I met her in a classroom, the ungraded room.  After school I took her home with me to meet my mother.

What did your mother think of her?
My mother wasn't home at the time.  She was in the store with my dad working. So we had cookies and milk and I was holding her hand and rubbing her back, I gave her a little kiss.

Was that your first kiss?
Yeah, I told her I'd walk her home but she said, “No, I'd rather walk home by myself.”

I loved her, she was one of my friends.  I wanted to have sex with her but  I knew she was too young.

You were eleven.  How old was she?
Eight or nine, around there.

You were only eleven, don't you think you were a little young to have sex?
Yeah, I guess so, I was old for my age.

How were you old for your age?
Because I was in the grocery business with my father.  I got to know older people, talking to them, learning from them, their age made me older.  Really older!  They made me 15 or 16 from retaining their knowledge in my head.  Doesn't that make you older?

It makes you learn more.
